THE LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION IN STRUCTURED METAL PACKING COLUMNS. II. THE STUDY OF MASS TRANSFER

The study of the liquid- liquid extraction in a column equipped with structured metal packing was proposed. For this purpose, hydrodynamic and mass transfer studies were performed on the packing SMV 350 Y especially conceived for the extraction process and provided by the manufacturer Sulzer Co, by courtesy. The second part of the work consists of several studies of mass transfer with or without chemical reaction. In previous studies, most of the experiments in extraction columns were performed on the less usual systems. In this work, systems more usual in oil refining industry were studied. High values of the overall mass transfer coefficients were found in each case and this proved the high efficiency of the Sulzer packing in the mass transfer for the extraction process accompanied or not by the chemical reaction. It was checked the validity of the mathematical relations for the calculation of the mass transfer coefficients and the enhancement effect of the chemical reaction on mass transfer rate was highlighted.
