IONEL BALA, LAURENTIU FILIPESCU
The paper deals with the underground water quality in Craiova town area. This town has been extended over large fields on the left bank of the Jiu river (altitude 75 -200m) Downhill springs have been catched in the middle of 18th century and were converted into public sources of drinking water. The interest in developing such a water resourcedecayed after 1910, when the central potable water distribution system has been developped. Some of old public springs water are still active, but they stand just for decoration purpose. The quality of underground waters in downtown fields of Craiova can be ascertained by a study of these old public springs water quality evolution over a period of 3 years. This study revealed high pollution level in this type of underground water; which is mainly due to the poor maintenance of municipal sewage system and also due to the over-fertilization of fields in surrounded area.
