The Characterization of the Films on Titanium and on the Ternary Alloy Ti-Ni-Mo

Abstract:

The corrosion and passsivation behaviour of the titanium and ternary Ti-1Ni-0.5Mo alloy in sulphuric acid solutions of different concentrations, at various temperatures is studied. Both the titanium and Ti-1Ni-0.5Mo alloy are passivated in sulphuric acid solutions due to the formation of the protective, compact, TiO2 oxide. The alloy corrosion potentials are nobler than of tha base metal. The alloy critical passivation current densities are lower than of the titanium because of the beneficial effect of the alloying elements. The concentration and temperature of the sulphuric acid solutions affect6 the electrochemical parameters of the passive films both for the titanium and the ternary alloy. The alloy metallurgical treatment by forgin increased the passive film stability, enlarging the passive range and decreasing the passive current density. The anticorrosion resistance of the passive films on the thermal treated Ti-1Ni-0.5Mo alloy is higher in comparison with the titanium.
