, Hydration and Hardening Processes in Lime-Pozzolana Binders

Abstract:

In this paper the hydration and hardening processes in lime-pozzolana systems are assessed. The pozzolanas were of volcanic nature (Racoş and Sugaşu tuffs). Plaster (CaSO4.0.5H2O) in different amounts (1%,6% and 8%) was used as chemical activator. The hydration - hydrolysis processes were assessed by chemical analyses (CaO content in aqueous solution) electrical conductivity measurement and differential thermal analysis & theromgravimetry. The data showed the different hydraulic activities of the pozzolanas, as well as the positive activator effect induced by the CaSO4.0.5H2O addition. The use of CaSO4.0.5H2O as activator admixure increases the mechanical strengths of lime-pozzolana binders. For the optimum amount of plaster, strength increases of 33-53%, were obtained for 28 days of hardening. The LPC mechanical properties are also influenced by the curing conditions: the hydro-thermal treatment (55oC) has a positive influence.
