Specific Aspects Concerning the Electrochemical Behaviour of Austenitic Stainless Steel Obtained by Powder Metallurgy


Abstract:

The paper presents the comparative evaluation of the electrochemical characteristics of both rolled 316L stainless steel and processed by powder metallurgy (PM). Microstructural and microcompositional characteristics of samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EDAX analysis. The electrochemical investigations revealed the specific influence of the sintering material microstructure and porosity on the electrochemical characteristics. Both materials have good passivation properties, illustrated by spontaneous passivation in reducing acids solutions. The coating stability is good and, in the second polarization cycle, a complete passive surface can be observed. These aspects argue the possibility of an advantageous use of PM material in applications where until now only the rolled material was required.
