Determination of Concentration of Air and Soil Pollutant Heavy Metals By ICP-AES

Abstract:

Mining activities such as ore extraction, ore enrichment into useful components, and processing these into concentrates, in the area of Baia Mare, contribute to the continuous polluting of the air and soil with heavy metals, bearing negative influences on the health of humans, plants and animals. Determining the level of air and soil pollution with heavy metals requires the determination of these metals’ concentration in samples of sedimentable dusts and soil, using certain analytical methods which would allow qualitative and quantitative elemental determinations, ranging from major to minor constituents, and further, to the analysis of traces. The method used in this paper, which meets these requirements and is applied to pollution estimation studies, is the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry method (ICP-AES), and in case the quantity of solution is large enough, in order to compare results, the heavy metal concentration was determined by means of the atomic absorption spectrometry method (AAS). A good concordance between the results obtained through these methods, especially for high concentrations, was observed. By determining the heavy metal concentration in the samples of sedimentable dusts and of soil, one can observe that the researched area is highly aggressed by the anthropical activity, being in one of the record places as regards cumulative pollution in Europe. Keywords: heavy metals, dutsts, soil, ICP-AES, AAS
