The Relationship between the Nowotny Chimney Ladder Solid State Phases and Metal-Phosphorus Wheels

Abstract:

The Nowotny chimney ladder (NCL) phases consist of chains (“chimneys”) of transition metal atoms surrounded by helices (“ladders”) of post-transition elements with a valence electron count of 14 per transition metal atom. In the prototypical NCL phase RuGa2 the environment of the gallium atoms in the ladders is related to that in the (CH3)2Ga+ cation or isoelectronic R2Zn derivatives and the environment of the ruthenium atoms in the chimneys is related to that of the nickel atom in the (t-BuP)6Ni wheel.
