Obtaining and Characterization of Sage (Salvia Sclarea L.) Essential Oil / b-Cyclodextrin Supramolecular System

Abstract:

The paper presents the nanoencapsulation of the sage (Salvia sclarea L.) essential oil in b-cyclodextrin, using the ethanol-water solution method, and the obtaining and rheological analysis of an antibacterial pharmaceutical cream with controlled releasing properties. Sage essential oil/b-cyclodextrin complexes were analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the raw essential oil and that extracted from the complex were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The yield of nanoencapsulation was 74% and the profiles of the TG and DSC analyses clearly indicate de formation of complex, the mass loss being 10%, comparatively with the value of 14% for the pure b-cyclodextrin up to 250°C. The main compounds identified in the raw sage essential oil were linalool (16.5%) and linalyl acetate (46.4%), the relative concentrations (the ratio between the GC concentrations of the compound from the complex extract-recovered essential oil-and from the raw essential oil, crecovered/craw) being 0.7 and 1.7, respectively. The known antibacterial properties of the sage essential oil were exploited in a pharmaceutical specialty containing 0.04% complex. The rheological properties of this pharmaceutical cream were investigated. This cream is pseudoplastic and thixotropic, according to the Loop curve, and has higher viscoelastic behavior, according to the Creep, Amplitude sweep, and Frequency sweep curves. The dependence viscosity vs. temperature is complex (exponential decreasing up to 28°C, increasing up to 30°C, and exponential decreasing). Keywords: sage essential oil, b-cyclodextrin, nanoencapsulation, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, rheometry
