Maximizing Chemical Information from Laboratory Statistics

Abstract:

A new method is proposed that sharply increases the amount of statistical information extracted from chemical experiments. The new statistical technology is particularly suited for scarce sample populations, when the new method proves the only means that allows the successful structuring of a histogram by increasing with one order of magnitude the extracted information. Hidden features would remain inaccessible otherwise. The method is proposed for very scarce samples that often occur in medical care and laboratory analyzes or in barely accessible environments. The chemical manufacturing of high explosives or propellants is such an example. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by numerical examples in experimental measurement of the combustion heat of rocket propellants, based on the previous experience of the author, as chief of research laboratory in the Romanian chemical industry. Given examples show that the new method is efficient for normal Gaussian distributions and for abnormal ones as well. Populations as small as of six elements are thus successfully processed and statistically characterized, while the regular statistics could only be applied to populations involving at least forty elements. Keywords: chemical histograms, chemical statistics, optimized statistics, small population statistics
