Fuzzy Logic used to Control a 15N Isotop Separation Plant

Abstract:

The implementation of a fuzzy logic based computerized control system for a 15N separation plant, by isotopic exchange in Nitrox system, is presented. This separation plant is in operation at National Institute for Research and Development of Isotopic and Molecular Technologies from Cluj-Napoca. The integration of fuzzy logic into the separation plant control offers a series of major implications of higher machine intelligence and includes several benefits as: better dynamic performance, higher degree of adaptability and maximum production of 15N with a minimum quantity of raw materials, energy consumption and operation labour. After the experimental study the control is focused on two determining parameters of 15N separation process: position of the chemical reaction zone in the product refluxers and temperature of the separation columns. For an accurate control of the reaction zone position, the temperature gradient along the length of the refluxer is computed using spline interpolation. The developed interpolation method, suitable for many chemical engineering applications, assures good smoothness and prevents the overshooting. An operator friendly interfacing routine helps in monitoring the most important 15N separation plant parameters.
