Study of 316L Stainless Steel Corrosion in Cvasibiological Conditions

Abstract:

This work is aimed to a better understanding of the biocompatibility of 316L stainless steel in the human body, where various biomolecules are able to bind metal ions and transport them from the surface of orthopaedic implant to various parts of the body. The passivation behavior of orthopaedic 316L implant was studied in natural plasma and plasma modified with different artificial media by using the electrochemical methods. The electrochemical behaviour of steel in natural plasma with: Physiological serum, Glucose, Dextran 70, Aminosteryl,Vamin, Intralipid and Kabiven in the concentrations corresponding to the administration dosages was investigated. The results were discussed in the context of the formation of passive film for which the stability strongly depends on the corrosive activity of the physiological media.
