Abstract:

Thermodynamics of Interactions in Al-K2TiF6-KBF4 System PETRU MOLDOVAN1, MIHAI BUTU1, GABRIELA POPESCU1, MIHAI BUZATU1, EMILIA USURELU1, VASILE SOARE2, DUMITRU MITRICĂ2 1University Politehnica of Bucharest, IMST Departament, 313 Splaiul Independentei, 060042, Bucharest, Romania 2National Research&Development Institute for nonferrous and Rare Metals - IMNR, 102 Biruinţei Blvd, 077145, Pantelimon, Ilfov, Romania The aim of this paper is to present the thermodynamic calculus of in-situ TiB2 formation in the aluminium matrix by the aluminothermic reduction of KBF4 and K2TiF6 mixed salts at 750 - 950oC. The in-situ formed TiB2 particles are very fine and thermodynamically more stable than other formed compounds (Al3Ti, AlB2). It is found that the silicon addition in aluminium hinder the formation of Al3Ti and AlB2, and almost has no effect on TiB2.. The XRD and SEM/EDS analysis of in-situ Al/TiB2 composites indicates the formation of only TiB2 reinforcement particles. Keywords: thermodynamic, K2TiF6, KBF4, Al, composite, in-situ reaction
