Aspects Related to the Purification of Biodiesel Synthesized in Alkaline Catalysis

Abstract:

This study dealt with some aspects of biodiesel purification when it was synthesized in alkaline catalysis. Experiments has revealed that introducing as a first biodiesel purification step, alkalinity extraction with deionized glycerol, remove the risk of high stability emulsion formation in the water washing operation. Alkalinity extraction with deionized glycerol before methanol recovery by vaporization, lead to reaction freezing and so the ester content formed in the synthesis step is conserved. More results are presented concerning biodiesel finishing by water washing with 1:3 ÷ 1:4 water : biodiesel volume ratio and by adsorption with different adsorbent materials among witch it has been noticed the bleaching earth “Tonsil”. Other data provided by this study are related to the biodiesel drying, finding that in order to achieve the moisture content required by the European Standard, a temperature of 160 ÷ 175 0C, under vacuum vaporization and a certain residence time in apparatus is needed.
