The Copolymers of
the Maleic Anhydride Modified with Benzocaine. II. The Influence of the Molecular Mass on the Antitumoral Activity


Abstract:

A series of maleic anhidride (MA) - vinyl acetate (VA), MA - methyl methacrylate (MM) and MA - styrene (S) copolymers were prepared and characterized. Under various reaction conditions, copolymers with molecular weights ranging between 18,000 and 213,000 have been obtained. The in vivo and in vitro tests performed on K562 cellular cultures (human chronic myeloid leukemia) have shown that, as a function of the molecular weight, the synthesized copolymers exhibit viable cells between 48.0% (higher molecular weight) and 82.0% (lower molecular weight) and an average tumor regression (ATR) between 5% and 71%. In addition, the studied copolymers exhibit a prolonged half - life in blood serum, accumulation in the solid tumors and inhibition of the tumors growth. The latter effect is supossed to be determined by the enhaced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Keywords: maleic anhydride copolymers, bioactive polymers, polyanionic polymers
