Interaction of Lead and Cadmium Ions with Some Components from Detergent Formulations in Washing Conditions 3. Interaction with Sodium Perborate

Abstract:

Percentage of available oxygen produced by sodium perborate tetrahydrate in distilled and hard (10 and 16od) water in the presence of 50 mg/L lead or 25 mg/L cadmium ions and their mixture in the absence and the presence of 5 g/L detergent A containing 20% zeolite A, 20% sodium perborate and 5% EDTA in washing condition (stirring, pH 10, 400C) was studied. The percentage of available oxygen in distilled water is slightly reduced by the individual ions (maximum 15% by Cd2+) and more (27%) by their mixture. Available oxygen loss increases with increasing water hardness, being higher for Cd2+ and the mixture of ions. The presence of detergent increases the percentage of available oxygen both in distilled and hard water in individual and mixed ion solutions due to the removing of Pb2+ and Cd2+ by the builders present into the detergent formulation.
