The Study of the Distribution
of Mixing Intensity in Bioreactors with Mechanic Stirring. 1. Simulated
Fermentation Liquids


Abstract:

The mixing time is one of the most useful criterion for mixing intensity of fermentation broths and for scale-up of biosynthesis processes. This parameter value depends mainly on the rheological properties of the broths, biomass concentration and morphology, mixing system characteristics and fermentation conditions. The study on mixing, by means of mixing time, for a laboratory stirred bioreactor, indicated the inhomogeneous distribution of mixing intensity into the broth. The main stagnant zone is placed between the stirrers, its formation being the result either of stirrers position on the shaft, or of liquid streams interactions. For simulated fermentation broths with apparent viscosity between 15.9 and 90 cP, the uniform mixing in whole bulk of fermentation broth has been reached for certain rotation speed values depending on broth apparent viscosity.
