A Stoichiometric Method for Establishing the Water Transport in the Electrolytic Cells with Ion Exchange Membranes

Abstract:

The sodium ion dynamic hydration number value assures the possibilities of calculus for the main indicators of the brine electrolysis reactor with ion exchange membrane (IEMR). For estimating this number, a stoichiometry based method is proposed . Using the simplified mechanisms, the stoichiometric relations were elaborated to establish the mass balances of the both, anodic and cathodic processes of brine electrolysis. Based on the measured concentration of the input and output anolite and anodic gases, the current efficiency was calculated by the Uhde-Krupp relation. Using this value, the real hydration number was determined by iterative method. Based on this value, the material balance of ions and phases was calculated. Using the date of material balance, the main figures of merit the IEMR were calculated. The determined current efficiency was similar to the Uhde-Krupp value. The precision of balances and the main transformation degrees are not affected by the hydration number, but they are determined by the precision of analytical investigation of the material flow.
